As much as the Democrat fund raising apparatchiks wished, the breakup of Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman was not the biggest news of the past week. Not by a long shot. Instead, you could hear the giant sucking sound of lots of hot air being let out of the Democratic/liberal/class warfare/race-baiting machine.

To wit:

You thought it was just about the pardons, or the gifts, or the book advance--all done barely legally. Or maybe even the $800,000 per year NYC office space. But, no! The Clintons tried to loot $28,000 worth of White House furniture. For the first time in years, there wasn't a hallelujah chorus of Clinton defenders.

Memo to Bill and Hill: Get what you can now, your stars are fading fast.

Remember the Ashcroft confirmation battle? A central figure was poor Judge Ronnie White, victimized by mean old John Ashcroft, who put the kibosh on his Federal judgeship. Then, the facts started coming out...

A while ago, he fathered a child out of wedlock--hardly a big deal these days. He initially accepted responsibility, and then recanted. It took a blood test and consent decree five years later to get him to pay child support. That's character for you!

Then there was the time he assured fellow Missouri legislators, who would be out of town on a particular day, that he would not call for a vote on a certain anti-abortion bill. It turns out that he DID make the call on that day, and the bill lost by one vote. For you cynics out there, this kind of thing just isn't done. Even politicians have an honor code. Lying and deception--perfect qualities for a Federal judge, right?

When nominated to the State Supreme Court, White had to admit on a questionnaire that in his entire judicial career he had never written or edited a single book or article, and had never even given a speech on constitutional or legal policy. Talk about affirmative action!

But here's the best part. On the same questionnaire, he was asked to describe his 10 most significant cases. Eight of them involved obviously guilty defendants accused of violent crimes, all with priors, that he got acquitted. Sound pro-criminal to YOU?

Typically, Ashcroft was silent about the manifold deficiencies of dear Ronnie White during the confirmation process.

Another faux martyr bites the dust.

As far as Jesse Jackson, what more is there to say about this unctuous patently phony race-baiting con man?

Finally, we have the continuing revelations from the Venona documents. As Herbert Romerstein and Eric Breindel have recently reported, the Soviet spy ring was well entrenched in the 1940's and early 1950's. Their recent book puts another nail in the coffins of Alger Hiss and the Rosenbergs, but the most controversial charge is that FDR's closest aide, Harry Hopkins, was also a Soviet spy.

I must admit that the Hopkins business left me cold. After all, with FDR so much under the influence of Stalin anyway, this revelation was sort of like finding out that not only the captain of the Titanic, but also its first mate, both wanted to plow full speed through the ice field, on that fateful night. In the end, the results would have been the same.

With alternative media breaking the stranglehold of the left-wing Information Mandarin Class, and with Dubya at the helm, the Titanic of our Federal government is about to come back from the murky depths of the Democratic Davy Jones' locker.
