HOW TO FIND DIRECTION WITHOUT A COMPASS
(during the day)
This one
is way cool, and comes to us courtesy of the U. S. Navy Seals....
1. Drive a stick into flat unshaded ground, so that at least
three feet of it is above the ground.
2. Mark
the tip of the shadow cast by the stick, and label the mark
"W".
3. Wait
10 minutes (or until the shadow has moved appreciably) and
mark the tip of the new shadow, labeling it "E".
4. Draw
a line connecting the "W" and "E" marks. This is a west-east
line.
Near the
spring and fall equinoxes (March 21 and September 23), the W-E
stick method is most accurate, at any time of day. Near the
summer and winter solstices (June 21 and December 21), it is
least accurate, but still usable. On every day of the year except
the equinoxes, the method produces a slight error before local
apparent noon, and a slight error in the opposite direction
after local apparent noon. Therefore, the errors in two readings,
taken an equal amount of time before and after local apparent
noon, will cancel each other out.
HOW
TO PAY OFF THE NATIONAL DEBT
The U.
S. Treasury can sell advertising to appear on currency. If you
disagree by saying that doing so will "lower the value and dignity
of the American dollar," try to repeat that statement with a
straight face.
Considering
that the life of a bill is in excess of one year, and that everybody
in the U. S., and most people in the civilized world see greenbacks
constantly, the advertising exposure cannot be denied. Different
ad plans can be set up to accommodate different budgets. Surely,
the Government has sufficient resources to launch such a program.
The only
objections you would hear would come from purveyors of other,
more conventional advertising media. But their objections are
obviously self-serving.
I add only
one provision: The revenue gained by the ad program could ONLY
be used to pay off the deficit. It could not be used, under
any circumstances, to fund new programs.
