On Monday,
the 28th of April, a brutal crime took place in the "safe" Los
Angeles suburb of Thousand Oaks.
A bank
robbery occurred, in which two employees were forced to lead
the robbers to the safe, located in the rear of the facility.
After taking all the money, the robbers ordered the employees
to return to the main room. It was then that one of them shot
teller Monica Lynne Leech, 39, in the back of the head--for
no apparent reason. She was pronounced dead a short time later.
The perpetrators
left behind some clues, and will be found. Not surprisingly,
community leaders are calling for the death penalty.
How have
we come to such senseless violence? Where can we run if such
a thing can happen in a town perennially ranked as one of the
safest in the nation with a population of more than 100,000?
To be sure,
Society has lost any sense of morality. But how did this happen?
For me, it is the natural consequence of over- secularization,
or "humanism," if you will. In the old days, the moral issues
had all been worked out, stemming from the Ten Commandments.
But perhaps by the end of World War I, it was time to get modern.
In the
modern world, we must believe in the infinite perfectibility
of Man. As such, any fault, no matter how terrible, is only
a minor setback! We can all reason together, hold hands, and
sing "Kum By Yah." All will be well, bye and bye.
We should
only visit the prisons and educate those poor inmates that stealing
and killing are not appropriate behaviors (somehow they did
not know this). Even though there was far more poverty and more
illiteracy in the 1930's, and less crime, we must go after the
current "root causes" of crime--poverty and ignorance. Otherwise,
we would be "blaming the victim." That is, blaming the offender
for actually committing the crime. How could it have been his
fault? Don't you see? Society failed him.
We must
not, under any circumstances, talk about right or wrong, because
that would be "imposing our will" on Society. Never mind that
anytime any group wants to do ANYTHING, it is trying to impose
its will on Society. Whether you vote Democratic, Republican,
or Independent, some group is trying to impose its will on Society!
Whatever
it takes, we cannot succumb to letting the old-fashioned morality
be reinstated. Why, that would be admitting that our great national
experiment in unlimited personal freedom, rampant Hedonism,
and radical egalitarianism was a colossal failure. Far better
to continue living in ostrich-like denial!
Repeat
after me: The modern way is best, the modern way is best...
