Suitable diluent air can be obtained from specialty gas suppliers, and in certain industrial settings, high-purity nitrogen is available as a plant-wide utility. Whatever the source, the diluent air must be free of detectable amounts of the target analyte, and—ideally—meet the following specifications:

MAXIMUM ALLOWABLE CONTAMINANTS

CO	< 0.5 ppm
Particulates	< 0.45 micrograms
N₂O	< 0.5 ppm
NO_x	< 0.5 ppm
SO₂	< 0.5 ppm
Total hydrocarbons	< 0.5 ppm
